READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SO YOU ARE 100% CLEAR ON THE TASK! FILL IN THE GAPS BY ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS
Brief:
Your school is hosting an awards ceremony for local community organisations. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.
Your work: Must be suitable for the audience
If you work as a group each candidate in the group must be able to show their contribution. Each candidate will be assessed individually.
TASK 1 Planning
1. My statement of personal aims:
Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:
Make sure I reach 15 minutes with an entertaining performance and look and sound confident throughout. I would like to challenge myself by making much more passionate body movements to show that I am confident when performing on stage.
I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals:
I have improved massively with my projection and now it has become one of my strongest skills. This will help me because I have been working on my technique and can use my head voice with good pitch which should help me perform my songs with a big range.
I will know if I’ve achieved it because:
I will know if I’ve achieved it because I will have positive feedback from my peers and both Miss Rotchell and Miss Harris. I will also listen back to recordings and evaluate my success and I should feel confident when I am on stage, this will also help me to pick up on small mistakes that I made and I can then improve my performance and work on where I went wrong.
How I will meet the expectations of the audience:
The venue of our concert is Monks Walk the majority of the audience will be mainly parents and friends of the people performing therefore they will most likely prefer to hear more commercial pop music rather than heavy rock or house music. I have chosen well known pieces of music so that it is more engaging for the audience as they are more likely to of heard it before and may like the song.
2. Plan of my contribution to the performance
The requirements of the brief and how I will meet them:
We have been asked to create a 10-15 minute set on our own or with someone else to perform at our school where we will be assessed individually. Our performance must be appropriate for the audience so the lyrics are clean as it contains people of all ages.
What I intend to do:
I intend to perform just by singing solo. I will sing the following songs, 'If I ain't got you' by Alicia Keys, 'Earned it' by The Weekend, 'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse and 'Ordinary People' by John Legend. First I will sing 'Back to Black'. It will be a good opening song because it is quite a low song therefore it will show my capability of reaching low notes and will be an example of how I can vary the different pitches. The two songs in between continue to show different ranges and how I can song in different tones. I chose 'If I ain't got you' as my last song as it is the song that needs more projection and will show of what I can do with my voice the best.
How I will do it:
I will do this by keeping up with the rehearsing both in and out of lesson and school and having a one to one lesson with my singing teacher who I perform my set to and then get feedback and things I can work on.
Who I will need to involve:
I will need to involve my singing teacher if I need her to play the piano for one of my pieces and also the sound crew to change to the instrumentals and make sure everything technical about the performance is in check.
The resources I will need:
Only a microphone and the related equipment for this - lead, mic stand, amplifier and mixing desk so a member of the sound team can check the levels. I will need to play my backing tracks through a computer.
The time needed for each song/ activity:
'If I ain't got you' - 3:43
'Back to Black - 4:28
'ordinary people' - 4:39
'Earned it' - 4:38
'Back to Black - 4:28
'ordinary people' - 4:39
'Earned it' - 4:38
Health and safety issues for rehearsals and the performances:
The noise level may be too loud for any older people in the audience. The leads could also potentially cause someone to trip over and hurt themselves. To avoid these hazards the sound crew will make sure the stage is safely set up along with the audio. I will check this and also make sure that I do not stand to close to the edge of the stage. I have to be careful as I will move around for expression in my set.
My set list:
Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Ordinary People - John Legend
Earned It - The Weekend
If It Ain't You - Alicia Keys
Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Ordinary People - John Legend
Earned It - The Weekend
If It Ain't You - Alicia Keys
All performed with backing tracks.
Style and Image:
All of my songs are very familiar and are all in the pop genre therefore the audience will enjoy this more than if they were to be listening to grime or heavy metal. When performing I will make sure I am making gestures with my hands to make the performance more engaging rather than me standing still with no stage presence at all. To sure that I am well aware of the style of whatever I song that I am singing I will make sure that I will show as much emotion as I can by making different facial expressions as well as my body language and hand gestures.
Ideas for the performance:
All I need is to put my instrumental tracks into a playlist so that they play one after another in the performance.
Staging and equipment needs:
I only need a microphone, an amp and an AUX lead. I will stand at the front of the stage as I am the only one performing so I need to ensure that everything I do e.g. all my gestures are clear to my audience.

Next lesson I would like to perform and run through my set on the stage and hopefully get everything recorded.
Rehearsal 5: 2nd February
In today's lesson I recorded all of my songs and listened to them to see what I could improve on. I noticed that I need to warm up more before I start my set to get my voice to sound much stronger and natural.
Targets for next lesson
I would like to listen to my dress rehearsal and see what I can improve on so that everything can sound as good as it can.
DRESS REHEARSAL ON STAGE and rehearsal in practice room: 8th February (2 hours) (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
When I performed my set on stage I missed out my third song 'earned it' because I didn't feel as if I was prepared enough to perform it. However I thought that I gave an engaging performance and I felt my projection was so much better and also my body language was while performing. My full evaluation is further down which explain what I thought went well, what I needed to improve on and my peer feedback.
Dress Rehearsal Evaluation
Strengths Reflection:
1st- I thought that my projection was much better as that was one of my weaknesses. I also thought that I put a lot of effort and emotion into my performance.
2nd- As this song was in quite a low key I think that I performed it well and even when there was some quite deep parts I still think I controlled it well.
3rd- The last song is the song that needed more power when it came to projecting my voice and I think that I achieved that especially when it came to the chorus.

3rd- The last song is the song that needed more power when it came to projecting my voice and I think that I achieved that especially when it came to the chorus.
-I think that my projection went well and also I didn't mumble like I used to when notes were either too high or too low.
-I also think that my facial expressions made the performance much more engaging as it looks like I am more passionate about what I am singing about.
-I also think that my facial expressions made the performance much more engaging as it looks like I am more passionate about what I am singing about.
Improvement Reflection:
I think that the stage set up and instructions could have been much clearer in terms of me knowing when to start as part of my feedback said that I looked like I didn't know what I was doing or when I need to start.
Improvement #1:Stage presence -When performing I need to make sure that I am engaging with the audience otherwise the performance will become boring and there are going to b four songs.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: I need to continue to make the right facial expressions e.g smile. In terms of my body language I need to move with my hands to show emotion and to make it seem as if the song means something to me even if it doesn't.
Improvement #2: Learning the lyrics- For the songs 'If I ain't got you' by Alicia Keys and 'Ordinary people' by John Legend I need to ensure that I fully learn all of the words so I can be and look confident when performing.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: Go over the two songs that I am less confident with and revise that lyrics until I know them off by heart.
Strategy:
Improvement #3: Composure- I tend to show and make it obvious when I make a mistake e.g by making a face or putting my hand on my chest.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: I need to just carry on if I make any mistakes and act as if nothing has happened.
Feedback from others:
In general I had good stage presence but I needed to show much more gestures and facial expressions to help make my performance that extra bit engaging. Also they picked up on me not knowing some of my lyrics therefore I needed to make sure that I rehearse these songs in whatever free time i have before the actual performance.
How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:
This helped me to improve on my stage presence and make it even better because during my performance I was more focused on not forgetting my lyrics and trying to hit the right notes so I wasn't really focusing on my body language etc so the fact they picked up on that is really helpful and means I can work on it and make sure I have it sorted for my final performance.
Conclusion:
Overall I think that I gave a good, controlled and engaging performance and the songs that I performed gave me the opportunity to show off what I am capable of in terms of variety of tones and pitches, breathing and it also made me realise where I my strong points are and where I needed to improve on for my finale performance. I also think that my projection was really good whereas before it was one of my weaknesses and I struggled with my breathing to then really hit the high notes and my lower notes.
Rehearsal 7: 9th February
In this lesson I just rehearsed 'earned it' because it was the song I was most unsure about and I felt I needed to feel much more confident with the lyrics and the song itself.
PERFORMANCE: WEDNESDAY 22nd February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
As this was the last chance I had to prepare I spent my time just going through my whole set as many times as I could so that if i noticed any ,mistakes I could work to improve them.
In my final performance I performed every one of my pieces and I felt so much more confident especially with 'earned it'. The rest of my evaluation is further down, which includes what I think went well, what could have gone better and my final peer feedback.

FINAL ASSESSED PERFORMANCE
TASK 3 Evaluation
Strengths Reflection:
I think the the final performance was a lot more rehearsed, everyone was confident with what they were doing. Things ran so much more smoothly as people acted on their feedback from the dress rehearsal. Everyone made every performer feel more confident by applauding them and they also made sure that they were silent throughout the whole performance which shows so much respect and interest towards the performer. Also the stage and music was set up so well which made it so much easier to run through the sets without any difficulty and disruption.
In my final performance I thought that my stage presence, body language and facial expression improved so much as I put in so much more emotion into each individual song. I also supported my higher and low notes much better which made me look and feel so much more confident. In my third song I repeated some of the lyrics in one part but my composure was so much better, I didn't make any sign to show that I had made a mistake.
Improvement Reflection:
As I made the small mistake in my third song by not remembering some of my lyrics and having to repeat myself I definitely needed to go over that song a bit more to ensure that looked and sounded confident.
Improvement #1: Memorising the lyrics
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To go over the song that I don't know as well a couple times a night to make sure that the lyrics are properly stuck in my head.
Improvement #2: I needed to of made my body language and hand gestures a little bit more bold to show how confident I am on stage while performing.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
By rehearsing and going over the songs and seeing where i could make these movements and then memorise them. So then when actually performing I wouldn't be making them up on the spot.

Improvement #3: I needed to support my breathing a bit better, especially when projecting high notes.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
I should've warmed up more and done more exercising on breathing.

Feedback from others:
Feedback 1. Her pitch was good, She had lots of emotion. Maddy was also very accurate in singing and her technique is clearly good as it sounded fantastic. Maddy looked confident on stage and that showed through her singing and standing upright, and in the emotion in her songs.
Improvements. I know Maddy was very nervous, if Maddy would work on her confidence, she would own the stage more by walking around and looking directly at the audience to be more engaging.
Feedback 2. Good pitch, emotion in the songs and that made them look professional. Also her set list was really well put together.
Improvements. Try to improve on eye contact with the audience because you looked around a lot.
How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:
I didn't realise that I was looking around as much as I was, so that's something I can work on for the future. Also I needed to focus a little bit more on building my confidence up so that I could've given an even better performance. However they picked up on how accurate my singing was which I didn't realise as I was focusing more on other things for example my lyrics.
Conclusion:
I think that I gave a really great performance as over months of rehearsing I can say that I did as much as I could to make sure that my finale performance was engaging and full of emotion. Although I made a few unnoticeable mistake e.g. my eye contact and repeating my lyrics in my third song I feel as if my confidence definitely had grown over the period of time that we have had to prepare. The stage and audio was set up so much better than the rehearsal performance which allowed all of the sets to run fast and smoothly which meant that I could easily give my 4 instrumental pieces to the audio team and get on with my performance. However in the transition into my third song the wrong backing was played but was then sorted out within a minute. Overall I think that my final performance showed everything that I am capable of and in terms of my actual singing I did the best that I could.
